Class notes:
To express likes and dislikes one could use the verb gustar. Gustar actually means ‘to be pleasing to’ therefore there has to be a recipient of the ‘pleasure’ or whatever is pleasing. Due to that, in order to express ‘to like’ we have to use the indirect object pronouns with the verb ‘gustar’.
The indirect object pronouns are:
me nos
te os
le les
The verb gustar is a regular verb. Therefore it is conjugated like a regular –ar verb. Right now we are going to focus on the third person singular form (gusta) and the third person plural form (gustan). Use ‘gusta’ with singular nouns and infinitives. Use ‘gustan’ with plural nouns.
Examples:
A mí me gusta la clase de español. (singular noun)
A Ud. no le gustan las matemáticas. (plural noun)
A nosotros nos gusta hacer ejercicios. (infinitive)
Other verbs that are formed like ‘gustar’ are :
-caer bien/mal - to like/dislike someone
-encantar - to really like, to be enchanted with
-fascinar - to really like, to be fascinated with
-importar - to matter
-interesar - to be interested in, to interest
-molestar - to bother, to be bothered by
-faltar - to lack, to be missing
Examples:
Me fascina la historia. (singular noun)
Les importa sacar buenas notas. (infinitive)
Le interesan las relaciones públicas. (plural noun)
